Stage 9

From Hanstholm, the journey continues towards the beach of Slettestrand, starting by the coast on a cycle path through the dunes with a view to the sea and the inlet of Vigsø Bugt and then continuing inland through the plantation of Hjardemål Plantage and dune plantation of Vester Torup Klitplantage. From here, you can do a short detour to the idyllic beach of Lild Strand. The trip continues past the cliff of Bulbjerg Klint. Make sure to stop here and take in the vivid bird life and one of the most incredible views on the west coast.

You continue through the dune plantation of Vester Torup Klitplantage and by the beach of Thorup Strand, one more detour to the sea is an absolute must: here you can see the coastal landing area where customised, blue cutters are lined up on the beach – unless they are out at sea.

Before this stage ends in Slettestrand, you go through the plantation of Svinkløv Plantage and past the iconic hotel of Svinkløv Badehotel which is located in the outermost dunes and features breathtaking views of the landscape and the sea.

In Svinkløv Plantage, you will most probably meet one or two mountain bikers. This is where you will find Mountain Bike Slettestrand, a company offering MTB holidays, camps, technique courses, events and much more. The plantation offers 35 kilometres of mountain bike trails, including some of the best trails in Denmark. One of the routes is categorised as one of the ”10 spires”, i.e. the 10 best MTB routes in the Danish public forests.

Bulbjerg is the only cliff in Jutland and the only bird cliff on the mainland. From the top of this cliff, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the North Sea and on a clear day, you can even see the lighthouse of Rubjerg Knude Fyr and Hanstholm. This limestone cliff is also home to lots of bird species, including 500 kittiwake couples (the most common gull species in the world). Bulbjerg is constantly exposed to erosion caused by the violent waves from the North Sea that suck up big pieces of limestone and spread them out on the beach close to the cliff.
