Thorsminde is located on a narrow tongue of land that separates the rough North Sea from the peaceful inlet of Nissum Fjord.
This is a truly authentic west coast town.
In Thorsminde, you are located right between the sea and the inlet in the middle of the Nature Park Nissum Fjord which is located in Geopark West Jutland. In April 2021, Geopark West Jutland was approved as an UNESCO Global Geopark and it includes the municipalities of Lemvig, Holstebro and Struer as well as exciting ”landscapes” below the surface of the sea in parts of the inlet of Limfjorden and the West Coast towards Jyske Rev. The geopark features a fascinating terrain which has been created by ice, wind and water, and this landscape has been providing the basis for human life during the last 9,000 years.
The 6th stage continues on the tongue of land between the West Coast and the inlet of Nissum Fjord through small villages and wonderful, rolling landscapes. By Trans, you literally hit the coastline because the cycle path takes you all the way to the edge of the impressive cliff of Bovbjerg Klint, past the lighthouse of Bovbjerg Fyr and onto the small coastal town of Ferring. From here, West Coast Cycle Route takes you eastwards around the lake of Ferring Sø. You can also decide to cycle westwards around the lake on a path along the dunes but then you must be prepared to encounter quite a lot of sand along the way.
You pass several summer cottage areas before you finish off the 6th stage with a lovely ride along the tongue of Harboøre Tange. On the tip of the tongue is the classic seaport Thyborøn which is surrounded by water on almost all sides. Fishing and the harbour activities make up the base of this town and it also offers several nice family attractions on land and at sea.

Strandingsmuseum St. George is located in the middle of Thorsminde. This unique museum reopened in 2017 after a thorough renovation and it tells the dramatic story about the two English liners, HMS St. George and HMS Defence, that stranded by Thorsminde during a storm on Christmas Eve 1811. Around 1,400 sailors drowned in the waves and only seven people survived. The museum tells the story through a unique exhibition featuring hundreds of items that were salvaged from the bottom of the sea by local divers. Here you can also find the stories of other dramatic strandings by the west coast of Jutland and of how the locals got to meet sailors from all over the world.
