Stage 5

The 5th stage starts in Hvide Sande in the middle of the tongue of land of Holmsland Klit with the inlet of Ringkøbing Fjord as the neighbour towards the east. The inlet, which is shallow and is protected from the West Coast by the long tongue of land, is the largest inlet in western Jutland, covering an area of almost 300 km². The shallow water is ideal for water sports such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, water skiing, SUP and wakeboard.

From Hvide Sande, the trip continues through dune landscapes and summer cottage areas, past the lighthouse of Lyngvig Fyr and onto the town of Søndervig. You can also travel this part on the asphalt path next to the road. It is a good idea to take a break in the cosy beach town of Søndervig and enjoy a refreshment or a nice lunch. In addition, this is where you will find some of the largest sand sculptures in Denmark and during the summer period you can participate in morning gymnastics classes on the beach.

From Søndervig, the route takes you slightly inland as you cycle between the inlets of Vest Stadil Fjord and Stadil Fjord in a scenic area with lots of bird life. A part of this journey takes you onto an old dike where you have a wonderful view of the landscape because you are slightly elevated. Afterwards, the route takes you back to the coast and the dune of Vedersø Klit and then through the dune plantation of Husby Klitplantage to Fjand. The last kilometres of the 5th stage are done on the tongue of land between the inlet of Nissum Fjord and the North Sea, and then you arrive at Thorsminde.

Lyngvig Fyr was the last lighthouse to be erected on the west coast of Jutland. It was constructed in 1906 following a tragic accident in 1903 that claimed the lives of 24 sailors. The lighthouse is located on a 17 metres tall cliff and measures 38 metres. From the top of the lighthouse, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the sea, the dunes and the inlet of Ringkøbing Fjord. Although the lighthouse no longer serves the sailors, every night it emits a rotating cone of light that casts a beautiful light across the entire area. Next to the lighthouse, you will find a small, cosy coffee house, a small exhibition about the lighthouse and a shop.
