MEN AT SEA (MENNESKET VED HAVET)
At the beach, slightly north of Esbjerg, is one of the most important Danish pieces of art, called ”Men at sea”, by Svend Wiig Hansen.
After your visit to Esbjerg, your trip continues past the amazing sculpture ”Men at sea” which you cannot miss. In Hjerting, the beach promenade is a cosy place for a break.
Afterwards, you pass a couple of smaller towns before you turn a corner in Tarp, continue across the bridge of Tarphagebroen and then cycle on for a while, enjoying the beautiful view of the inlet of Ho bugt and the Wadden Sea National Park.
Just before reaching Oksbøl, you pass a couple of closed down gravel plants which have now turned into shining lakes in the middle of the landscape. In Oksbøl, you can buy groceries before you turn westwards and ride on an asphalt road through the shooting area of Oksbøl to the town of Vejers Strand. From here, you continue through forests and the most beautiful dune landscapes where you have a good chance of spotting deer. Make sure to stop at the sand-covered oaks in Kærgård Klitplantage or by Filsø.
The trip to the town of Henne Strand adds just a few kilometres to your journey and it is definitely worth the effort. In this cosy coastal town, you can buy an ice cream, enjoy the sunset and perhaps stay overnight.
After Oksbøl you can do a wonderful detour of approx. 25 kilometres which will award you with some great attractions: the westernmost point in Denmark, Horns Rev, the lighthouse of Blåvandshuk Fyr and not least the internationally known Tirpitz Museum on the outskirts of Blåvand. If it is open, you can do a shortcut back to West Coast Cycle Route by cycling down the gravel road from Blåvand to Vejers through the shooting area of Kallesmærsk.
