Stage 12

SAND AND CITY LIVING
HIRTSHALS - SKAGEN

The last stage of West Coast Cycle Route starts in the seaport of Hirtshals. From here, your journey continues to Grenen, the northernmost tip of Denmark. The route takes you through the plantation of Uggerby Plantage where you cycle right by the sea, across the stream of Uggerby Å and continue through the area of Tversted. In the dune plantation of Tversted Klitplantage, you will pass the lakes of Tversted Søerne which is a nice place for a short break.

Once you have passed the camp ground of Skiveren Camping, the route continues slightly inland through the most beautiful dune and heath landscape. You will cycle past the migrating coastal dune of Råbjerg Mile before almost reaching the eastern coastline of Jutland. Your journey towards the town of Skagen takes you through the dune plantation of Skagen Klitplantage and past The Sand-covered Church (Den Tilsandede Kirke). There are only a limited number of places to shop for food and drinks along this route, so remember to bring lunch.

West Coast Cycle Route quite naturally ends at the parking lot by Grenen and from here you can either walk or use the tractor bus to get to the northernmost tip of Denmark

The town of Skagen is well-known for its characteristic yellow houses, the red tiles and the white “lace” on the roofs. But Skagen is also full of town life, good restaurants, and nice coffee houses.
Here you can stay overnight in wonderful hotels, and you should allow yourself plenty of time to visit the historical museums in town, go shopping or explore the atmosphere in the marina and in the commercial harbour.

RÅBJERG MILE

Råbjerg Mile is the largest migrating dune in Denmark which has not been halted by vegetation. This amazing natural scene is an obvious destination during your cycle trip. The dune consists of a 1,000 metres long and 1,000 metres wide sand pile which is as tall as 40 metres above sea level at the highest point.
Every year, the wind moves the dune 15 metres to the east/north towards Kattegat. It leaves behind a low and moist sand surface which reaches westwards towards Skagerrak where Råbjerg Mile was established more than 300 years ago.
