Stage 11

The 11th stage starts in Løkken. First, you pass the summer cottage area of Nr. Lyngby where many of the houses are standing right on the edge and are in danger of falling into the sea. The North Sea knows no mercy and it drags along whatever happens to be in its way. The famous lighthouse of Rubjerg Knude Fyr used to be in a dangerous spot but in 2019 it was moved further inland, safeguarding it for many years to come. This lighthouse and the cliff of Rubjerg Knude Klinten are a must on your journey.

The idyllic artists’ town of Lønstrup is the perfect place to stop if you are feeling hungry or need a place to stay for the night. At Skallerup Seaside Resort, you can try out various activities, enjoy the wellness facilities or grab a bite to eat at one of the resort restaurants. Now, West Coast Cycle Route continues inland through the dune plantation of Tornby Klitplantage, the town of Tornby and the adjoining summer cottage area, and then the 11th stage ends in the town of Hirtshals.

Hirtshals is a proper seaport where fishing still plays a vital role. Here you can eat and shop, and if you need a place to stay for the night, you will find plenty of nice alternatives here. Remember to visit the lighthouse of Hirtshals Fyr which is the landmark of Hirtshals.

Rubjerg Knude Fyr is located on the impressive migrating dune of Rubjerg Knude which reaches almost 100 metres above sea level at the highest point. Slowly but surely, the sea is eating away the coast and several metres disappear every year. Although Rubjerg Knude Fyr was located 200 metres from the shore when it was completed in 1900, it was in 2019 located just a few metres from the edge due to erosion. Same year locals decided to move the lighthouse 70 metres further inland on the cliff, hoping to safeguard the lighthouse for another 30 years or longer.
